Case Study : Lost Production Prevented
A critical 600kW electric motor was being monitored with Howler’s online vibration monitoring system. Shortly after a planned shutdown the vibration levels for the motor drive end bearing exceeded the warning level. Lubricating the motor was immediately recommended by the Howler analyst. This saw levels drop temporarily before they started to rise rapidly again. A week later it exceeded the alarm level. The Howler analyst identified significant wear and damage occurring within the bearing and advised that the motor be replaced at the next opportunity. A new motor was sourced and another shutdown planned. The motor DE bearing continued to deteriorate rapidly until the planned shutdown was reached and the motor replaced. The quick and accurate diagnosis by the Howler analyst allowed the client to plan a suitable time for both sourcing a replacement motor and production availability, all while averting a breakdown situation.
